Venue - Ruhr-University Bochum

After three years of construction, RUB opened its doors in 1965 and from the outset generated much structural change in the Ruhr region. It was the first of the new post-war universities in Germany and the first university in the Ruhr region. The political decision to found the university was made by the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1961, with construction commencing a year later in the open countryside above the Ruhr valley to the south of Bochum. At the time it was Europe's largest building site. Nowadays, RUB is the third largest employer in Bochum.

As a highly international university, RUB has five international graduate schools, over 4000 international students from 130 countries and over 300 partners in the Sokrates/Erasmus Programme. In 2007, RUB was awarded a grant for the establishment of its "Welcome Centre" to provide a "full service" package for visiting scholars.
